This is an important question, because it gets right to the heart of what Christians believe about God, about the world, and about themselves.
The “Gospel” literally means “good news”. But to understand the good news, we first need to understand the bad.
1. All Have Sinned
This is more than simply “being bad”. Being sinful means we have totally rejected God and His ways. We all do it, all the time. We cannot help but reject God. We are all so infected by sin that, under our own power, we are unable to do anything but reject God and His ways. We see this all around our world today: all the problems in our world stem from the fact that people reject God and His ways.
This is a problem because the consequence of rejecting God is being separated from Him. God is just, and there can be no other penalty for rejecting Him. Separation from God means death and it means never being close to Him again.
But, even although it is our fault that we reject God, He wasn’t happy leaving us this way.
2. Christ Came and Died
If the consequence of sin is death, then there was only one thing God could do to save us: take that death upon Himself. So He came into this world as the human being Jesus Christ. He taught us about what it means to follow God. He lived the way we were supposed to: perfectly following and relating to God, and other people.
Then, Jesus died on a cross. He took our sinfulness upon Himself, and in exchange gave us His righteousness. Now, when God looks at us from Heaven, He doesn’t see our sin, but sees us through the righteousness of Jesus. That’s why Jesus had to die in our place: He took our punishment so that we can be free!
3. We Must Have Faith
In order for Christ to take away our sin, and give us His goodness, we need to put our faith in Him. Faith is another word for trust. We trust that God has done this for us, because God loves us. This is why Christians talk about faith, and why faith is so important. We are saved from our sin when we put our faith in Jesus Christ.
Putting your faith in Jesus is no more difficult than simply talking to Him and asking Him to take away your sin. This is called Prayer. If you want to pray to Jesus now, and put your faith in Him, click here.
4. The Holy Spirit and New Life
Faith is the first step in a journey which sees us coming back to the way God wanted us in the first place. After you pray to Jesus, you will receive the Holy Spirit. This is the presence of God, which helps you every day to become more like the way God wanted you to be.
But we still make mistakes, we still turn away from God, and we still die. So the last part of the Gospel is the promise of New Life. Jesus didn’t just die; He also came back to life in what is called the Resurrection. This is a promise which says that, one day, all who put their faith in Jesus will come back to life. They will live on a New Earth with one another, and with God,This is a hopeful future where God will, “wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Revelation 21:4)
I pray that, if you are reading this and you are not a Christian, that it helps you take that step and become one. If you have, please get in touch with someone: either me through this site, or a local Christian group. May God bless you as you begin your journey of faith with Him!
